Celebrity magazines and tv shows have long preyed upon the celebrities among us to use as entertainment fodder for the masses. That’s what they do isn’t it? Entertain. Well, most stars would disagree and say they never signed up for the endless parades of stalking paparazzi who follow them both night and day. Ironically enough their most often used weapon against the press, is the press itself; however, they have finally found a weapon that hits celebrity magazines and tv shows right where it hurts- the pocketbook.
What weapon is this? Well, the masses are never going to satiate their hunger for celebrity dirt and “news,” so the celebrities themselves have decided to cash in on the gravy train they embody. Celebrities are taking the news out of gossip reporters hands and giving it directly to the people. Readers of both celebrity blogs and twitter accounts enjoy this cutting out of the middle man so to speak.
Celebrity blogs are on the rise in popularity, and more and more of the most famous actors, actresses, and musicians, are turning to blogging as both a creative release, and a means to usurp media power. This means less fresh news for celebrity magazines, and of course, Entertainment Tonight, has a few less hot stories to report “first.” People are catching on that they do not have to go to magazines or television to get the latest “scoop” and viewer and readership numbers are down.
Less viewers/readers equals less sponsors. Less sponsors equals less money. Celebrities have finally figured it out. People are always going to want to know about them, so they may as well tell their own version of the story. This way, they get to have their own voice, and create their own image. Better yet, this way they get to rob the pockets of the industry they feel has preyed upon their precious privacy.
